Mount St. Helens Roads and Facilities to Open for the 35th Anniversary of the 1980 Eruption

The absence of a spring snowpack has enabled Gifford Pinchot National Forest officials to access road systems and complete needed maintenance in time to re-open roads and facilities for the upcoming anniversary of the 1980 eruption.

Forest Road 99 and the Windy Ridge Viewpoint–

• Forest Roads 99 and 26 will open on Friday, May 15.

• Special 35th anniversary interpretive talks will be offered in the Windy Ridge Amphitheater at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on May 16, 17 and 18 and also on May 23, 24 and 25 for Labor Day weekend.

• Regular seven day per week interpretive programs at Windy Ridge and along Forest Road 99 will begin on June 27.

• The grand opening of the new Cascade Peaks Information Station is scheduled for Saturday, July 18.

Ape Cave Lantern Rentals and Interpretive Services –

• Starting May 23rd, Ape’s Headquarters will be open weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

• Seven day per week operations at Ape’s Headquarters will begin June 27.

Forest Roads 81 and 83 are open for the season.

Forest Road 81-830 to Climber’s Bivouac is open for the season.
