Fourth of July Holiday Forest Roads Conditions

Many forest routes and recreation sites are becoming clear of snow just in time for the Fourth of July holiday. Some roads remain closed due to winter damage and higher elevation sites remain inaccessible due to lingering snow.

A popular area which will not be open for the holiday is the Windy Ridge/Forest Road (FR) 99 area on the east side of Mount St. Helens. Road crews have yet to access this area to check for winter damage due to snow.

Forest Road 26 will also remain closed, though repairs are occurring to the damage which kept it closed last season. Forest engineers predict both routes to open in mid-July when conditions permit and necessary repairs are completed.

Forest Road 25 is open as of July 2. Please check http://www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/giffordpinchot/recreation#condfor more detailed information on many popular forest roads.

Forest Road 25 will be closed again at the extreme north end Sept. 5-15, 2012 for a culvert replacement at Woods Creek.

On the south side of Mount St. Helens, many of the most used routes have been cleared and opened for public travel. Forest road 83 is now open allowing access to the Lahar and Lava Canyon area. Forest Road 8303 is also cleared and passable. Forest Road 81 is open, and 830 is clear to Climber’s Bivouac.

Seasonal maintenance is complete on FR 90, and this road is clear to Twin Falls Campground.

Forest Road 23 is clear from Trout Lake to FR 90, but impassable just south of the FR 2334 junction at Babyshoe Pass. From the north, FR 23 is passable to the Takhlakh turn off. Takhlakh Lake is still inaccessible due to snow. Blue Lake ORV Trail (#271) is open to ATV riders to one mile beyond Blue Lake.
