Phase 2 – Next Step in Planning for Area 74 Prescribed Burn

Release Date: Mar 5, 2018

Truth or Consequences, NM, March 5, 2018—For Immediate Release.  The Area 74, Units 9 and 10 Prescribed Burn is planned for 9,000 acres. The burn plan for this project has been approved by the Regional Office in Albuquerque.

Fuels samples were evaluated in early February and more will be taken as the season progresses. Archaeological surveys have been completed and the area was cleared. Surveys will occur this spring to determine if Mexican spotted owls are nesting in the area south of Scales Canyon. If an owl pair is found a Protected Activity Center (PAC) will be drawn for their nesting habitat and the owl PAC would be excluded from the burn acreage. The Gila NF is also doing a lot of internal coordination on preparing the roads and handlines that will be used to control the prescribed burn. The Forest also continues to coordinate with private landowners, grazing permit holders, NM Department of Transportation, NM Division of Forestry, and county governments.

The Gila NF will also implement the Incident Command System, which includes an Incident Commander, Public Information Officer, Safety, Operations, Planning, Logistics, and Finance section chiefs. These will assist in the organized management of this project.
