Silver City Ranger District Fire Personnel to conduct Pile Burning at Fort Bayard Administrative Site

Silver City, NM, November 30, 2018— Silver City Ranger District fire personnel will begin prescribed burning activity beginning the week of December 3, as weather conditions permit.  The woody debris pile is located at the Ft. Bayard Administrative Site.  The pile is the product of safety measures taken at the Administrative Site.

Projected moisture may result in ideal conditions for pile burning.  The grass surrounding the piles has greened up which limits fire spread away from the pile. No road or area closures are in place.  Light smoke columns will likely be visible from these piles for all of the Silver City/Arenas Valley/Bayard Valley basin, but dense night time smoke settling is not expected.  Information on air quality and protecting your health using the 5-3-1 visibility method can be found at the New Mexico Department of Health’s website https://nmtracking.org/fire or by calling 1-888-878-8992. Fire information can be found at nmfireinfo.com.

For more information on the prescribed burning activities contact Randy Gomez, Fire Management Officer, Silver City Ranger District at 575-388-8201. For information on the Gila National Forest, check out our website at www.fs.usda.gov/gila.
