Royal John Mine Road Closure for Cleanup Project

Silver City, NM, April 5, 2019 - For Immediate Release.  An environmental cleanup began this week at the Royal John Mine and Mill located in the Silver City Ranger District of the Gila National Forest. The mine site is east of San Lorenzo, New Mexico in Grant County on the western slopes of the Black Range of the Mimbres Mountains.

The environmental cleanup will require heavy construction equipment during daylight hours. The Royal John Mine Road (CR 3-77) will be closed at the Forest boundary, approximately 7 miles from NM Hwy 61. This section is closed to public motorized use 24 hours a day except for Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to Sundays at 9:00 p.m. The closure will be in effect from April 1 to approximately June 28, 2019. The following forest roads will be inaccessible due to the county road being barricaded:

  • Silver Creek Road FR 523
  • Upper Cold Springs Road FR 886
  • Forest Roads 4087C, 4209A, 4209B and 4087G

Cowboy Park, a popular dispersed camp site, is also closed as part of this project. Project updates are posted on a sign board on the Royal John Road just off NM Hwy 61.
