           Horse Sense – Packing Lightly on Your National Forest

  • Help reduce overgrazing of grasslands, bring supplemental feed.

 

  • Certified weed-free hay/feed is recommended to help prevent  the spread of noxious and invasive weeds.

 

  • Rotate stock throughout the area to reduce trampling and prevent overgrazing.

 

  • Use tree saver straps with highlines to tie your stock, to prevent girdling of trees. Or use pickets, hobbles, or temporary, portable fences.

 

  • Keep stock at least 200 feet from streams, lake shores, and camping areas.

 

  • Break up and scatter horse manure and fill in pawed holes.

 

  • Practice "Leave No Trace" principles: pack it out.
