Collaborative Forest Restoration Program Grant Recipients - 2008
In 2008, four CFRP projects on the Gila National Forest were approved for a total of $992,445. Grants were awarded to Santa Clara Woodworks, Gila Tree Thinners, RC Forest Products, and the Gila National Forest Permittees Association.
Santa Clara Woodworks
Santa Clara Woodworks of Grant County received $152,600 to purchase and fabricate equipment to allow their business to work more effectively with other small forest industry to acquire pinon pine boles from forest restoration and wildland/urban interface thinning projects. The pinon boles could then be processed into flooring products and fuel biomass.
Gila Tree Thinners
Gila Tree Thinners of Silver City received $360,000 for a three year project designed to treat 400 acres of pinon and juniper in the Burro Mountains. The project area is located adjacent to the Burro Mountain Homestead. The work is designed to reduce hazardous fuels while restoring the landscape to a more natural condition. Most of this work will be accomplished by use of a machine called a “Bull Hog” which chips, shreds, and beats trees into mulch.
RC Forest Products
RC Forest Products, of Reserve NM, received $119,845 to purchase equipment and machinery for processing small diameter timber into packaged fuelwood. The grant has paid for a firewood processor, front end loader, and a firewood bundling machine. The firewood is cut, split, packaged, and then shipped to destinations throughout the country.
Gila National Forest Permittees Association
The Gila National Forest Permittees Association was awarded $360,000 for a three year project designed to develop a sustainable community forest restoration cooperative in the eastern Gila NF. Also included in the project is a feasibility analysis for establishing different types of wood production facilities and their associated cost, supply, and demand constraints. The project will also produce a series of desk guides to assist entrepreneurs and future CFRP applicants in development of forest restoration based businesses in remote locations and answer key questions related to making forest restoration projects self-sustaining.
