August 13, 2018 Covington, Va - The George Washington and Jefferson National Forest will be implementing new seasonal opening and closing dates for the Longdale Recreation area in Alleghany County, Virginia beginning this fall. Parking at the gate for access to the trails will remain open throughout the year.  The gate and bathroom at the day use area will be open annually from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The gate and bathroom will close September 4, this year and will reopen May 27, 2019

“By closing the area during non-recreation seasons, we hope to reduce vandalism and preserve the unique history of the Longdale recreation area,” said District Ranger Elizabeth McNichols. “The Longdale recreation area receives very low visitation during the off-season. This decision returns the recreation area to the same open season that it operated under prior to 2015.”

The Longdale Recreation Area was first opened in 1940 as the Green Pastures Recreation Area at the request of the Clifton Forge Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).  During this era of segregation in America, Green Pastures was one of the few recreation areas in the United States serving African Americans. The recreation area was integrated in the 1950s.
