Forest Service to Temporarily Close Flagpole Road (FS 85A) for Road Repair Beginning April 22, 2019

Contact(s): Alex Faught (540) 432-0187

Harrisonburg, Va.  - April 8, 2019 - The USDA Forest Service will temporarily close a section of Flagpole Road (FSR 85A) located on George Washington and Jefferson National Forest in Rockingham County, Va. beginning April 22, 2019 to repair storm damage.  The road will be closed beginning at the intersection of Briery Branch Road (SR 924) and extending 3.85 miles beyond this intersection. The road will reopen when repairs are complete which is expected to be in approximately nine weeks.

This repair work is needed to address damage from repeated wet weather events that caused significant damage to the road infrastructure.  The roadwork will improve drainage and road safety.  While repairs are underway, portions of the road will be unpassable. Also, heavy equipment will be traveling into and along the road making the road unsafe for visitor traffic.

“I recognize this is a popular road and the temporary closure will be an inconvenience to our forest users,” Acting North River District Ranger Alex Faught said, “However, visitor and worker safety is my primary concern at this time. I look forward to the road being open again and serving as a source of enjoyment for Forest visitors.”

For more information about the road please contact the North River Ranger District office at 540-432-0187.
