Forest/Park Visitor Center Operations Change to Accommodate Increased Visitation

Release Date: Nov 29, 2017

(Munising, MI) -- Hiawatha National Forest and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore officials announced changes in their interagency visitor center operation. Increased visitation over the past several years has overwhelmed the existing interagency visitor center, located in the Forest Service’s District Office. In response, the agencies will each be relocating their services in order to accommodate the increased service needs.

Effective December 30, 2017, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore visitors will be served at Munising Falls Visitor Center. The Lakeshore’s winter visitor center hours will initially be Thursday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors can reach Pictured Rocks information staff by calling 906-387-3700.

Hiawatha National Forest visitors will continue to be served at the existing 400 East Munising Avenue location. through April 30, 2018. The Forest’s winter office hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m . to 4:30 p.m. Customers can reach Hiawatha National Forest staff by calling 906-387-2512. The Forest Service will explore partnership opportunities (e.g.public/private partnership) to provide public lands visitor services, so there may be additional changes in the future.

“As a result of increased tourism, we have outgrown the current Munising Interagency Visitor Center facility – everything from parking to restrooms to service space has been overwhelmed,” stated Charlie Marsh, Munising District Ranger, Hiawatha National Forest.

Therefore, the agencies identified the need to explore other options. The new arrangement is a way to provide improved customer service at more locations with minimal investment while allowing exploration of new ways to deliver visitor services.

In order to direct visitors to the new service locations, the agencies will be updating existing signing over the coming months. For more information about this partnership, contact Susan Reece (906) 387-2607 or Charlie Marsh (906) 387-2512.
