Recycling Project Idea

Bag of empty toilet paper rollsBag of Yooper FirestartersInstead of throwing the empty cardboard tubes from toilet paper rolls into the waste can, employees at Hiawatha National Forest's Supervisors Office routinely save and collect the tubes for donation. Then, the tubes are donated to Lakestate Industries, Incorporated, which recycles cardboard tubes into Yooper Firestarters.

Lakestate Industries' employees make the firestarters using the tubes, shredded paper, and wax.  Income from sale of the Yooper Firestarters supports the organization's operations.

"This is a great recycling project idea for your classroom, 4-H club, youth organization or even just at home!" said Janel Crooks, Hiawatha Public Affairs Officer. She added that there are many "recipes" online for do-it-yourself toilet paper roll fire starters.
