Do Not Move Firewood

Montana has suitable habitat for harmful forest pests like the gypsy mothAsian long-horned beetle, and emerald ash borer. Therefore, Montana prohibits the transport of firewood from most US states and the Canadian provinces where the emerald ash borer is present.

Montana authorities have several recommendations for people who use firewood to prevent unknowingly moving damaging forest pests into Montana.

  • Do not move firewood across state lines.
  • Buy it where you burn it, both for home heating and camping firewood uses.
  • Make sure your firewood comes from within 50 miles and ideally within 10 miles.
  • Make sure your firewood is heat-treated or certified pest-free firewood.
  • Do not assume that firewood is safe to transport even if it does not have any signs of infestation.
