Holter Lake-Gates of the Mountains Comprehensive River Recreation Management Plan

Helena, MT, July 22, 2019- The Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), has completed a draft of the Comprehensive River Recreation Management Plan (CRRMP) for the Holter Lake-Gates of the Mountains Recreation Area on the Missouri River.  The CRRMP covers an area proceeding north from Hauser Dam downstream through upper Holter Lake, continuing through the Gates of the Mountains Recreation Area to the downstream end of Holter Lake and ending at Holter Dam. The CRRMP can be downloaded from the Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/hlcnf.

This reach of the Missouri River and surrounding lands offer recreational opportunities and access to a diversity of resources for a variety of public lands users. The CRRMP addresses the current status of these resources, outlines goals and desired conditions, describes the needs for change determination process, and proposes management direction to carry forward.  The public is encouraged to contribute to this planning effort that will secure the natural, cultural, and recreational values of the Holter Lake-Gates of the Mountains Recreation Area for future generations.

The planning team will be holding a public open-house meeting to provide information on the CRRMP, describe the needs for change identified at a stakeholder meeting and among the agency resource specialists, and to gather public input on the proposed management direction in the CRRMP. The public open house meeting on the CRRMP will be held on Tuesday, July 30th from 6 to 8 pm at the Helena Supervisor’s Office, 2880 Skyway Drive, Helena, Montana.

The Missouri River is a nationally recognized river famous for its fishing, outstanding scenery, and the historical settings present throughout it. It is also a primary access route through the Gates of the Mountains, a distinctive and iconic limestone cliff formation. The river’s outstanding natural resources and diverse recreational opportunities, combined with its proximity to Great Falls and Helena, contribute to its popularity.  As local populations have expanded, recreational use has increased on the river, and concern over how this might impact river resources and recreation experience initiated this planning effort.

To be most helpful during this phase of the project, we request that you submit comments by Monday, August 12, 2019. Additional comments are welcome throughout the planning process. We anticipate that the CRRMP will be finalized by fall 2019. Comments can be submitted one of four ways:
