Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) now on Avenza!

If you own a mobile device such as an iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android (4.0.3 or newer), or Windows Phone, you can take the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest MVUMs with you.

1. Download the Avenza PDF maps app to your mobile device.

2. Once you have Avenza on your mobile device, use your device to download the maps at pdf-maps.com while running the app select 'Get Maps' and search for “Humboldt-Toiyabe MVUM” to download MVUMs for Humboldt-Toiyabe Natioanl Forest.

With the app and maps installed on your mobile device, you will be able to:

• View your location on the PDF maps using the built-in GPS device 

• Measure distances and areas

• Plot waypoints 

• View maps offline

Through a no-cost contract with Avenza Systems, Inc., the USDA Forest Service has made electronic versions of its Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) available as free downloads for smartphones and tablets.  

3. Download PDF versions of the MVUM maps directly without a map reader application.

This interactive travel map supplements the corresponding motor vehicle use map (MVUM) by displaying on detailed color maps the National Forest System (NFS) roads, NFS trails, and areas on NFS lands that are designated for motor vehicle use on that MVUM, as well as nearby points of interest. The interactive travel map also allows visitors to search for designated roads, trails, and areas by vehicle class and time of year. The interactive travel map does not display designations for motor vehicle use for dispersed camping or big game retrieval. Refer to the applicable MVUM for that information. The interactive travel map does not replace the MVUM, which makes designations of roads, trails, and areas legally effective pursuant to 36 CFR 212.56 and 261.13. Printed copies of the MVUM are available at the corresponding District Ranger's and National Forest or Grassland Supervisor's Offices.
