Ely, NV. – The Ely Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be hosting a public event in honor of the 25th Annual National Public Lands Day. It is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29 at Camp Success located approximately 18 miles northwest of Ely, Nevada, near Success Summit. Local partners this year include the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Great Basin National Park and White Pine County.

“The public will be helping the U.S. Forest Service and its partners load trucks with firewood to be transported to a designated location in Ely where it will be split then delivered to low income seniors in the community,” said Ely District Ranger Jose Noriega. “We also need trucks and trailers to haul the firewood off the mountain.”

Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the event will conclude at 2 p.m. In addition, there will be other family-friendly activities, education stations, and Smokey Bear will make an appearance. Participants will receive a free tee shirt, while they last. Lunch is also provided.

Anyone attending the event is encouraged to dress in layers and wear closed toed shoes, sunglasses, hats, pants and long sleeve shirts. Also, bringing sunscreen, bug spray, and snacks are a good idea. Work gloves are a must since participants will be assisting with loading firewood. Water will be available.

Prior to the event, the Forest Service, BLM, and Great Basin National Park, employees will cut down standing dead trees and cut up slash and dead and down trees within the camp area.

Coordinated each year by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), National Public Lands Day brings together volunteers from coast to coast to improve and restore the lands and facilities that people across America use and enjoy every day.  Everyone is encouraged to follow and participate in the conversation on social media using the hashtags #NPLD and #NEEF25thNPLD.

For more information or to volunteer your truck and trailer, please call Jose Noriega, Ely District Ranger, at (775) 289-0176 or Erin Rajala, Recreation Staff Officer, at (775) 289-5129.
