Bishop Pass

7/20/19

  • At Long Lake, outlet crossing part of the trail is underwater and on the southern edge of Long Lake 100 feet of the trail is flooded about 6 inches deep.
  • Switchbacks above Spearhead Lake contain large snowdrifts. This is where the majority of snow begins around 11,000 feet elevation.
  • Approaching Saddlerock Lake, snow travel navigation is required with multiple foot paths, with some intermittent dry trail visible.

 7/24/19

Bishop Pass's switchbacks are now only 20% snow covered with deep drifts of unavoidable snow (not stock passable, yet). There are several large boulders that have fallen in the trail about half way up the switchbacks on the Inyo N.F. side. The top of the pass has a large/deep sun-cupped snow field.

Dusy Basin is now about 80% snow free. Dusy Creek (below the footbridge on the Dusy switchbacks) is running high and fast.

Muir Pass remains 100% snow covered from Helen Lake to as far as the eye could see from the top of the pass looking NB on the JMT. About 65% snow coverage began in sections on the South side of the pass at the lake that sits at 10,900ft. Water crossings are higher but fluctuating.

Trekking poles are highly recommended and traction devices are only really helpful in the early mornings. Ice ax and crampons are no longer necessary.
