McGowan Cross Country Ski Trails Update

Release Date:

CHESTER, Calif., February 1, 2017 – Several of the trails in the McGowan Cross-Country Ski area have been compromised due to heavy rain and snowfall. Water is tunneling beneath the snow, making it unsafe to groom the trails where this is occurring, due to the weight of the grooming equipment. Visitors are advised to use caution if skiing or snowshoeing across these areas. Grooming is continuing at this time on the main route, out to the cloud seeder and back. Maps showing the areas of concern are posted at the McGowan trailheads on Highway 89 and 36 and are available on the Lassen’s web site.

Lassen National Forest lies at the Crossroads of California, where the granite of the Sierra Nevada, the lava of the Cascades and the Modoc Plateau, and the sagebrush of the Great Basin meet. The Forest is managed for recreational access as well as timber and firewood, forage for livestock, water, minerals, and other natural resources.
