Opportunity to Comment on Smokey Bear District’s Proposed Boy Scout Mountain Fuelwood Project

RUIDOSO, NM, August 29, 2018 – The Lincoln National Forest, Smokey Bear Ranger District is proposing to treat approximately 269 acres of piñon and juniper woodland northeast of the Capitan Mountains through a commercial fuelwood contract. This stand is overstocked with small diameter piñon pine/ juniper that have encroached into historical meadows and drainages. The purpose of this project is to reduce the canopy density with the desired outcome of increased tree spacing of varying size classes while protecting large and old growth trees, and to provide a commercial fuelwood opportunity. Drought, insect infestation, and disease has resulted in dead standing trees (snags) within the project area. Most of these snags will be removed. Areas with deeper productive soils will be opened up to help re-establish grasses and forbs that provide grazing for wildlife and livestock. Clumps of trees will be retained in areas with rockier, shallow soils. Clumps can range in size from 3 trees up to two acres. Clumps of smaller diameter trees exhibiting healthy crowns will be retained when larger and old growth trees are sparse or not present. A map of the proposed treatment area is shown in figure 1. The site is located approximately 31 miles east/northeast of Capitan, NM. The site can be accessed by traveling south on Forest Road 130 from State Highway 246. The legal location is T8S R17E Sec 1, 2/ T8S R18E Sec 6.
