*UPDATE (week of 10/8): Due to recent rain and snow, Forest Road 503 is in poor condition. Only vehicles with 4WD should use the road as a bypass when the road is wet. All passenger vehicles and vehicles towing trailers are heavily discouraged from using the road during these conditions.

(STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.)  September 11, 2018 – Due to a culvert replacement on a tributary of King Solomon Creek, a portion of Forest Road 550 in north Routt County, Colo. will be closed from Monday, Sept. 24 until approximately Nov. 1. The segment of Forest Road 550 to be closed is located on the Routt National Forest, approximately 0.6 miles north of the Forest Road 500 and 550 intersection, near Little Red Park.

The 550 Road will be closed four miles north of Columbine, Colo., at the junction with the 500 Road. All through traffic will be detoured, as a bypass cannot be constructed at the site. The closure will be in effect 24 hours a day and seven days a week until the project is complete. There will be no through traffic on the closed portion of the 550 Road, however an alternate route does exist.

Non-motorized access to the surrounding Forest will still be allowed and dispersed recreation sites outside of the closed road are available. Forest visitors will still be able to access all areas, although travel times may increase by 30 minutes.

Specifically, hunters with licenses in Game Management Unit 5 may be impacted and should plan in advance for increased travel time. Access during first and second rifle seasons for elk and deer will be impacted, as well as archery and rifle bear season.

Northbound Traffic: Forest Road 500 will remain open to access Little and Big Red Parks. Traffic wanting to access Forest Road 550 north of the closure should continue north on Routt County Road 129 from Columbine for four miles, turn right (east) onto Forest Road 503, and continue four miles to Forest Road 550.

Southbound Traffic: Traffic heading south on Forest Road 550 should turn right (west) on Forest Road 503, continue four miles to Routt County Road 129, and turn left (south) towards Columbine.

Temporary road closures are a short-term inconvenience needed to provide for long-term resource benefit and public safety.  Visitors need to be aware of ongoing changes that may affect travel.

Those traveling through the National Forest should pay attention to signage and refer to the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for alternate travel routes. MVUMs are free and physical copies can be obtained at the Hahns Peak/Bears Ears District Office (HPBE), 925 Weiss Drive, in Steamboat Springs. Electronic versions of the free map are available online at http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/mbr/mvum/maps.

It is the user’s responsibility to know where they are and what types of restrictions there may be when accessing public lands.

Visitors with questions about roads and trails on the Routt National Forest should contact the Forest Service Office (HPBE) in Steamboat Springs.
