(STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.)  August 13, 2019 – Construction to reroute a portion of Forest Road 508 in north Routt County, Colo. will begin Monday, Aug. 19. The reroute is needed to address wetlands resource concerns in the Whiskey Creek Watershed, Routt National Forest.

Initially, a section of previously closed road will be improved, and construction of a new segment of road will take place. During that time, the current segment of the 508 Road will remain open. Once the new portion is functional, then it will be opened, and the current road will be closed and decommissioned. In all, the entire project is expected to last approximately two weeks.

The 508 road is a connector route between Forest Road 550 to the east and Routt County Road 129 to the west. During both construction of the new road and decommissioning of the old road, there will be no loss of public access. Forest Trail 1197, or Whiskey Creek Trail, which has a western trailhead right next to the construction area, will remain open during the project.

This project is a result of the Little Snake North Environmental Assessment and its’ subsequent Watershed Restoration Action Plan. A half mile of road will be relocated away from a tributary to Whiskey Creek to an upland location north of the creek. As it currently exists, the 508 Road is detrimentally contributing to watershed health.

Non-motorized access to the surrounding Forest will still be allowed during the project. Forest visitors will still be able to access all areas.

Those traveling through the National Forest should pay attention to signage and refer to the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for travel routes. MVUMs are free and physical copies can be obtained at the Hahns Peak/Bears Ears District Office (HPBE), 925 Weiss Drive, in Steamboat Springs. Electronic versions of the free map are available online at http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/mbr/mvum/maps.

The 2020 MVUM for the Hahns Peak/Bears Ears District will reflect the rerouted 508 Road.

Visitors with questions about roads and trails on the Routt National Forest should contact the Forest Service Office (HPBE) in Steamboat Springs.
