(STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.)  October 4, 2019 – The USDA Forest Service, Hahns Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District is seeking public input on the proposed North Routt Fuels Reduction Project in Routt County, Colo. The project would improve forest health and provide for human safety by treating timber stands on up to 3,000 acres.

The project is located on the Routt National Forest in the area surrounding Steamboat Lake. The area has been heavily impacted by the mountain pine beetle epidemic, resulting in high mortality of mature lodgepole pine.

Shaded and unshaded, natural-looking fuel breaks would be created by the project around the wildland urban interface in the Steamboat Lake area. Project objectives will be accomplished through a variety of mechanical and hand fuels removal methods, as well as via prescribed fire. Treatments would:

  • Help in the suppression of potential wildland fires.
  • Provide for human safety by reducing current and future fuel hazards, as well as safety threats from hazard trees.
  • Help reduce the potential cost of wildfire suppression through use of timber sales and non-emergency contracts that tend to be lower in cost.

It is anticipated that conformance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) would occur through use of the Wildfire Resilience categorical exclusion that is part of the 2018 amendment to the 2003 Healthy Forests Restoration Act. This categorical exclusion is applicable to qualifying wildfire resilience projects in designated areas on National Forest System lands.

Public input would be most helpful if received by Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Additionally, an information-sharing meeting will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019, 4 p.m. at the North Routt Fire Department Station 2, near the community of Steamboat Lake. Forest Service staff will present the proposal at the beginning of the meeting, and there will be opportunities for both individual and group discussion.
