Always be prepared for rain, sleet and snow when you visit the Cascades, no matter what time of year it is. On the right Connor Proctor, age 16, pushes his little brother Keegan Proctor, age 13, in front of Lake 22, a popular hike off of Mt. Loop Highway.

Knowledge

IF YOU ARE HEADED TO THE Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest call the visitor information centers first to find out about trail and road conditions. The Ranger Station at REI can answer questions pertaining to state lands and national parks as well as national forests in the Pacific Northwest. If you are new to hiking, start out on family friendly hikes and work up from there.

KNOWLEDGE CAN MAKE a difference. Sign up for a hiking class at Washington Trails Association or Mountaineers and learn about the 10 Essentials.
