Everett, Wash., 11/01/2023 – After washing out nearly two years ago, the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is excited to announce that Forest Service Road 39 (or Glacier Creek Road) is again open to the public!
A temporary, single lane bypass has been put in place at the mile 3.8 washout site. Ultimately, the Forest Service will invest $1.2 Million in a permanent fix that will occur over the next couple of years.
This road provides access to the Heliotrope Ridge Trail, climbing the north side of Mt. Baker, and serves as a motorized Sno-Park in the winter months.
“I’m glad we were able to get this temporary fix in before winter,” said Mt. Baker District Ranger Ted Neff. “Individual users, Indigenous Nation members, guide companies, and outdoor education groups have all been significantly affected by the lack of access to the north side of Mt. Baker.”
Ranger Neff coordinated with Forest Service staff, the Nooksack Indian Tribe, and dedicated road maintenance volunteers to develop the bypass. A light touch was embraced, so no trees were removed and all roadwork was conducted within the existing road prism.
The public is encouraged to use caution when traveling on the single lane bypass and to carry chains and a shovel with them as snow is already falling in the area.
