State Route 542 to Artist Point is now open, marking the second straight year that crews opened the road to the popular viewpoint before July. The warm spring helped Washington State Department of Transportation clear snow that typically ranges in depth from 15 to 20 feet. Artist Point is located at the very end of the highway, beyond the Mt. Baker Ski Area, and boasts 360-degree views of Mt. Shuksan and Mt. Baker, as well as access to a variety of trails.

Despite the road’s opening, drivers who visit Artist Point during the next couple of weeks should be prepared for possible winter driver conditions.  Call the Glacier Public Service Center at 360-599-2714 for more information..
