Lookouts

Lookouts are tangible symbols of Forest Service heritage, perched on high peaks with unobstructed views where they have been used throughout the years to detect and control fires in remote wildlands. Following the devastating fires of 1910, fire detection became a priority within the Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps built many in the 1930s across the country. Today, local organizations volunteer time and materials to preserve this piece of history.
