Helicopter Logging to Begin in the Span Oak Area on Monongahela National Forest

Contact(s): Kelly Bridges, Public Affairs Officer

Elkins, W.Va., April 14, 2021 — Helicopter logging operations are nearly complete in the Heckart Ridge Helicopter Re-Ad Timber Sale area in Preston and Tucker counties. National Forest System lands in this area will soon re-open for public use.

The helicopter is moving to the West Fork Helicopter Timber Sale, north of Bartow in Pocahontas county, and will begin lifting logs from the Span Oak area on or around April 19.

Once the helicopter starts flying, the Forest will close an area bounded by Span Oak and Elklick Runs to all public entry. Forest Road 224 (Span Oak Road), that is typically open to Class Q hunters, is within this area and will be closed to all use. The Forest closes areas to public use during helicopter operations to provide for public safety. Please obey all posted signs.

Heavy log truck traffic is expected on County Route 250/4 (John’s Run Road) during times of active logging operations. Use caution when driving in this area.

For more information, contact the Greenbrier Ranger District at 304-456-3335. Additional information and a map of the closed area can be found under our Public Notices
