Lake Sherwood Recreation Area

 Improvements Update

Lake Sherwood Recreation Area is one of the most developed and heavily used recreation sites on the Monongahela National Forest.  The high level of use and aging facilities create an ongoing need for repairs and improvement projects.  The Forest Service is in the process of planning and implementing several projects to replace existing facilities and increase accessibility throughout Lake Sherwood.  Many of these improvements will also reduce potential safety hazards.

The following projects were recently completed or are planned for this spring:

  • Fishing pier: A new 75-foot fishing pier will provide more people the opportunity to be on the waterfront and fish, or spend time with friends and family who are fishing.  This new pier is being installed in response to public requests for such a facility.
  • Shade structures: Two new10x10 covered bench areas, one near the new fishing pier, another near the boat rental, were installed to provide visitors a shaded place to sit and relax.
  • Picnic sites:  Three picnic sites have been improved and are now accessible.  Improvements include leveling, and surfacing with compacted gravel.  These sites are located near the new fishing pier.
  • Lakeshore retaining wall replacement-The 137 feet of retaining wall adjacent to the boat rental have been replaced to protect the lake and ensure public safety.
  • Footbridge replacement- The arched footbridge between the two beaches is being replaced.  The original bridge was installed over thirty years ago and is damaged beyond repair due to rot.  Design of the replacement bridge will be the same, yet use durable composite materials for bridge planking.  Bridge removal has started and a temporary closure order is in place.  The area is currently unsafe for public access and is posted with signs and flagging.  The new bridge should be installed and open for use prior to the start of Lake Sherwood’s busy season in late May.  The beach area will be closed for one day during the installation of the new bridge.
  • Boat dock replacement- The existing boat dock will be replaced with a larger structure, and will be relocated next to the boat ramp to accommodate launching watercraft.
  • Wastewater treatment plant maintenance and improvements- Holding lagoons will be dredged and cleaned, new lines installed, and the irrigation field will be replaced.  This project should be completed by May 15th.

Recreation fees, authorized by the Land and Water Conservation Act, helped fund the wastewater treatment plant improvements. The remaining projects received funding through the federal budget.
