Fire prevention poster contest

MDF Engine 46 with Alturas Elementary School kidsModoc County kindergarten through sixth graders recently received fire awareness and prevention information at local schools from personnel representing Modoc National Forest, CALFIRE, Modoc County Public Health, Alturas Fire Department, Adin Fire Department and BLM.

Women in uniform holds poster up for a child to view.Students learned about campfire safety, when to call 911, why it is important to have exit drills in the home, how smoke detectors save lives, what to do if clothes catch on fire and what to do if they find matches or lighters. They were then invited to participate in the Modoc Fire Prevention Poster Contest and create posters using the concepts they learned.

Winners from each grade at Big Valley, Tulelake, Alturas and Cedarville elementary schools were announced and prizes awarded.

The winning posters will be shared with the community and area visitors. They will be on placemats in local restaurants and on fire prevention signs across the county by June 1.

The winners were:

  • Big Valley: Mia Villarruel, kindergarten; Case Myers, first grade; Allison Edgerton, second grade; Madelyn Crites, third grade; Bridget Oney, fourth grade; Remington Blue, fifth grade; Zoe Bouse, sixth grade.
  • Alturas: Oliver Battram, kindergarten; Stephanie Winkle, first grade; Emma Roan, second grade; Griffin Jaeger, third grade; Tatiana Dolan, fourth grade; Jasmine Robertson, fifth grade.
  • Tulelake: Valeria Garcia, kindergarten; Alexander Garcia Alcala, first grade; Geovanni Alvarez, second grade; Madison Fine, third grade; Andrew Gritman, fourth grade; Cassandra Hernandez, fifthk grade.
  • Surprise Valley: Maggie Gentry, kindergarten; Maezy Smith, first grade; Makya McGarva, second grade; Mackenzie Diven, third grade; Taylor Carey, fourth grade; Alexis Hill, fifth grade.
