Travel Analysis Report

The Modoc National Forest (MDF) has completed the Travel Analysis Process (TAP) and Travel Analysis Report (TAR) as required under 36 CFR 212.5(b)(1), Subpart  A: Administration of the National Forest Travel System. Under this regulation, the Forest Service was directed to identify the minimum road system needed for safe and efficient travel; as well as, for the administration, utilization, and protection of National Forest Lands. We also analyzed user created, unauthorized routes that were identified but excluded from the Subpart B decision for the MDF Motorized Vehicle Use Map (MVUM).

This Travel Analysis Process updates and expands upon the earlier assessment summarized in the 2002 Modoc NF Roads Analysis.

The TAP and TAR for the MDF is a forest-wide, science-based analysis and report that provides a broad overview of the current transportation system and identifies a sustainable road system that provides access for the public and forest management activities, minimizes environmental impacts, and can be maintained within budget constraints. Potential opportunities for changes to the current road system identified in the TAR are intended to help inform decision makers during future site specific planning efforts.

The TAR is not a decision document and any changes to the current road system will be completed in a separate planning process that would include the opportunity for public input.

Although the travel analysis does not authorize changes to the current road system, it is an important step to identify a road system that may best serve the needs of the public and National Forest as we move into the future.
