Section of Forest Service Road 16 Closed for 4 Weeks in Early November

Release Date: Oct 29, 2018

Narrow road with USFS truck

Sandy, OR - The Mt. Hood National Forest announced today that a portion of the 16 Road, sometimes referred to as “Red Hill Road” on the Hood River Ranger District will be closed on or around November 5 for approximately 4 weeks due to timber harvest operations taking place in the area.  Forest visitors wishing to use Forest Service Road 16 (FSR 16) should anticipate the closure restricting travel access during the week and some weekends. The 16 Road is narrow and large equipment will be in or alongside the roadway making it necessary to close this section of the road for public and operator safety.  The point closure is located about 7 miles from Red Hill Bridge and about 8 miles from the 18 Road junction coming from the other side.  The 16 Road will remain open on both sides of the closure point.

The closure will be in place weekdays, Monday through Friday, with the road re-opening during the weekend.  An occasional weekend closure may be warranted depending on the progress of the operation. Any weekend closures will be planned a few days in advance and notice will be posted by Thursday morning, before the weekend closure.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this point closure will cause some Forest visitors.  We timed the closure so that summer recreation and visitor travel would not be impacted by timber harvest operations,” said Hood River District Ranger Janeen Tervo. “The 16 Road will remain open to through traffic on the weekends and we hope that weekend closures will be rare. Except for the closed section, the road will remain open, enabling visitors to access this area of the forest.”

Hikers wishing to access the Vista Ridge Trail on the 1650 spur from the west side of Highway 26 should use Lolo Pass Road in the town of Zigzag.  From Hood River, visitors to Vista Ridge Trail should turn onto the 13 Road, which connects to Lolo Pass Road in the town of Dee, Oregon.  Access to the Vista Ridge area through Parkdale will not be available during the road closure. Visitors wishing to access the Vista Ridge Trail from the 1650 spur should do so from Lolo Pass Road (FSR 18).

Notices regarding the closure will be posted on the Forest website Alerts and Roads Table, Facebook and Twitter, and at the Hood River Ranger Station.  Check for the possibility of a weekend closure before planning your travel route in the area.

The area will remain open to other activities, such as hunting, mushroom picking and Christmas tree cutting, but users will not be able to drive through the worksite.
