Merrill Hollow Prescribed Fire April 7, 2018, south of Newburg (1733 acres):

Contact(s): Cody Norris 573-341-7405

As weather permits, the Mark Twain National Forest will be conducting a prescribed fire on the Houston/Rolla/Cedar Creek Ranger District tomorrow. If moisture moves into the area before tomorrow, however, this burn may be cancelled. The prescribed fire unit has the best smoke dispersion when northerly winds occur. This condition is expected for tomorrow and will assist firefighters in carrying out a successful burn operation.

Hunters should avoid this area and find an alternative location to hunt if the prescribed fire operation occurs. Fire personnel will post signs and patrol the area to ensure everyone is out before any burning operations start.

Prescribed fire in this oak/hickory woodland allows for native vegetation regeneration and helps with game animal populations as it clears underbrush and promotes new growth.

The prescribed fire unit’s boundaries are: County Road 7550 along its northwest edge; Forest Service Road 1576 (Kaintuck Road) along the western edge; a segment of T Hwy to the southeast; Forest Service Road 1594 and 1594 along the eastern side; and short segments of constructed control line to complete the boundary.
