The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests is currently recruiting for the 2018 Kelly Forks Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program - a residential, work-based conservation and education program for young men and women between the ages of 15 and 18. Could it be you this year, exploring, working and learning about the great outdoors in a setting like no other?

What is the Youth Conservation Corps? YCC is a program for youth designed to develop an awareness and understanding of the nation's natural resources and heritage - natural and heritage resources that belong to you! The Forest Service recruits youth from around the country and from all social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds for the program. Learn more.

The Work: What will you be doing?

If selected, you will be based out of the Kelly Forks Work Center on the North Fork Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. This unique place is located in north-central Idaho, where you will work together with a Forest Service crew leader and other staff to complete conservation projects. These projects may include trail maintenance and construction, campground maintenance, landscape restoration, resource management, visitor support services, and more! While many projects will be based close to the station, some might involve backcountry camping. And don’t worry-we’ll be there with you, too!

The Play: Opportunities

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in evening and weekend recreational activities such as hiking, rafting, fishing in blue-ribbon trout streams, trips exploring the local area, and discovering the many options for careers in the Forest Service and other land management agencies.

The Place: Where will you stay?

Kelly Forks Work Center is located 25 miles north of Pierce, Idaho, and resides at the confluence of Kelly Creek and the North Fork of the Clearwater River. The center functions as lodging for Forest Service staff and seasonal Job Corps youth, and is the spring-board to reach some of the remote areas on the North Fork Ranger District.

Program Benefits

The program is challenging - you will work in a variety of weather and terrain conditions while completing projects. But with that hard work will come a strength you didn’t know you had, new leadership skills, and a strong sense of self-esteem knowing you have done a job well.  You will learn first-hand about environmental and conservation issues, meet new people, and learn about the rich heritage and incredible natural beauties of this vibrant landscape.

Logistics

The 2018 Kelly Forks YCC program will take place from July 8 - August 4, 2018. Four youth will be selected to participate in the program and will be stationed at the beautiful Kelly Forks Work Center in the heart of the Clearwater Mountains. Participants will be required to live on location at the work center, and room and board will be provided at a minimal cost. Wages will be set at the rate of $7.25 per hour and YCC enrollees will work 40 hours a week.

Requirements

No previous wilderness experience is required, but a willingness and ability to work in a physically active outdoor program, get along well with others, and maintain a positive attitude are essential for success.

Applicants must be 15 years of age by June 18, but not over 18 years of age by August 13. Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States, its territories, or its possessions. A valid U.S. Social Security number is also required.

Participants will be required to cover their own transportation costs to and from Orofino, Idaho (North Fork Ranger District headquarters). Lewiston, Idaho is the closest city with an airport (56 miles west of Orofino). Other nearby airports are in Spokane, Wash. (147 miles), Missoula, Mont. (177 miles), and Boise, Idaho (256 miles).

Transportation to and from the work site can be arranged - we will work with you on figuring out logistics! Work clothing and boots will be provided, and scholarships may be available to help cover transportation and support costs.

Please see additional requirements in the application below.
