August 6 marked the final day of the 2019 Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps season. This year, over 30 local youth on six different crews worked all across the Clearwater Valley to log over 10,000 hours of work outdoors focused on forest health, timber project planning, fuels and fire mitigation, road maintenance, trails and campground upkeep, and much more. The season culminated in a celebratory barbecue at Winchester State Park where the youth crews and their parents, partners, and supporters celebrated the accomplishments of the hard–working participants and reviewed the work they accomplished this year. Youth crew members and crew leaders also enjoyed a Logger Sports competition at the park as a final bonding experience amongst the participants.

The Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps (CBYCC) completed eight weeks of work on public and private lands in the Clearwater Valley this summer. Six field crews and two frontline office staff worked full time supporting the missions of various partner and community organizations, including the USDA Forest Service. Projects throughout the summer included tree planting, wildfire fuels reduction, weed reduction, trails and facility maintenance, and much more. Several of the local communities adjacent to the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests supported a CBYCC crew this summer. Crews were based out of Kamiah, Kooskia, Potlatch, Orofino, and Grangeville.

CBYCC is an annual, paid summer program offering local youth ages 16 through 18 an opportunity to experience the outdoors in a work–place setting while also providing a fun learning environment and exposure to a variety of natural resource career paths. Piloted in 2013, CBYCC is a partnership effort between the Clearwater Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc.; USDA Forest Service, Clearwater Basin Collaborative, and other state and federal agencies, local industries, communities, and organizations.
