Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests Summary of Fire Restrictions and Closures

General Forest

Restrictions and closures for public health and safety due to wildfire are constantly changing.  Additional information and new restrictions will be posted at http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/nezperceclearwater/alerts-notices.   Other closures across the forest are in place for various activities and can also be found at the link provided above.

Special Order No. 01-17-00-17-002: With little to no precipitation in the forecast and the current Fire Danger level across the Grangeville Dispatch Zone at Extreme, local land management agencies implemented additional Stage 1 Fire Restriction in the Grangeville Fire Restrictions Area, Uplands beginning at 12:01 a.m. August 16, 2017. 

In addition, The Palouse Ranger District on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests is divided by the Coeur d’ Alene and Grangeville Dispatch Zones.  As of August 16, 2017, the portion of the Palouse District located in the Coeur d’ Alene Dispatch Zone (which includes Laird Park, Giant White Pine, and Bald Mountain Campgrounds) is in Stage II fire restriction and the portion located in the Grangeville Dispatch Zone is in Stage I fire restrictions.  For more information, please call the Palouse Ranger District at 208-875-1131.

Special Order No. 01-17-00-17-001: With the threat of wildfire danger increasing rapidly throughout many parts of north central Idaho, local land management agencies have implemented Stage 1 Fire Restrictions in the Grangeville Fire Restrictions Area, Riverbreaks and Hells Canyon National Recreation Area beginning at 12:01 a.m. on August 9, 2017.

The fire restrictions do not include wilderness areas.  Stage 1 Fire Restrictions will remain in effect until further notice. Please visit http://www.idahofireinfo.com/ for current information regarding fire restrictions or contact your local land management office. 

North Zone

Palouse Ranger District – (208) 875-1131

The Palouse Ranger District on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests is divided by the Coeur d’ Alene and Grangeville Dispatch Zones.  As of August 16, 2017 the portion of the Palouse District located in the Coeur d’ Alene Dispatch Zone (which includes Laird Park, Giant White Pine, and Bald Mountain Campgrounds) is in Stage II fire restriction and the portion located in the Grangeville Dispatch Zone is in Stage I fire restrictions.  For more information, please call the Palouse Ranger District at 208-875-1131.

LOCATION

The Giant White Pine Campground and Trailhead parking lot are located along Idaho Highway 6 in the Palouse Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests in Section 2, T43N, R3W, Boise Meridian, Latah County, Idaho.

Laird Park Campground is located along Forest Road 447 in the Palouse Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests in Section 31, T42N, R2W, Boise Meridian, Latah County, Idaho.

Bald Mountain Look Out is located along Forest Road 377 in the Palouse Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests in Section 34, T43N, R2W, Boise Meridian, Latah County, Idaho.

AREA DESCRIPTION: Beginning at the junction of Hwy 6 and Forest Road 447 in S35, T42N, R3W, Boise meridian; north along Hwy 6 to the junction of Road 377; then east along Road 377 to the junction of Road 1433; then southwesterly along Road 1433 to the junction of Road 767; then south along Road 767 to the junction of Road 447; then westerly along Road 447 to Hwy 6 the point of beginning.

Central Zone

Area Closure

Order No. 01-17-06-17-015:

Beginning at the Moose Creek Ranger Station in section 12, T33N, R12E, Boise Meridian in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness following East Moose Trail #421 northerly to the junction with Trout Peak Trail #427. Then follow Trail #427 easterly to Freeman Peak and the junction with Lost Horse Trail #430. Then follow Trail #430 easterly to Horsefly Meadows and the junction with Pettibone Creek Trail #633. Then follow Trail #633 southerly to Selway River Trail #4 in T32N, R13E Boise Meridian. Then follow Trail #4 northwest back to the junction with Trail #421 at Moose Creek Ranger Station, the point of beginning. The trails bordering the closure area shall remain closed.

Lost Horse Trail #430                  Closed from its junction with Selway River Trail #430 in section 12, T32N, R12E northeasterly to Horsefly Meadows and its junction with Pettibone Creek Trail #633 in section 5, T33N, R14E.

Dog Point Trail #435                   Closed in its entirety from its junction with Selway River Trail #4 in section 32, T32N, R13E to northerly to its end at its junction with Lost Horse Trail #430 in section 11, T33N, R13E.

South Zone

Area Defined within:  Commencing at the intersection of RD 221 and RD 444 traveling east to the end of RD 444 then due south to Trail 312.  Traveling south along Trail 312 to the junction of Trail 91. Travel south on Trial 91 to the junction of Trail 311. Travel east on Trial 311 to the junction of Trail 201. Travel south on Trial 201 to the Main Salmon River. Travel west along Main Salmon River to the Wind River Pack Bridge/ Trail 088. From Wind River Pack Bridge traveling north along Trail 88 to junction with RD 394.  From RD 394 traveling north to the junction with RD 221.  From the junction of RD 221 north to point of beginning.

Travel on FS RD 444 and in the area bound by defined area is prohibited.

Note:

River Camps and boat traffic along Main Salmon River are open to the public adjacent to closure area. 

Salmon River is open to all activities.

County Road 1614 (Salmon River RD) is open.

FS RD 221 and 394 is open.    

FS RD 444 will be closed.

Trail 088 and Wind River Pack Bridge will be closed.

Red River Ranger District(208) 842-2245

Area Closures

Order No. 01-17-05-17-002:  (Related to Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness fires)

Commencing at the intersection Trail 502 and Main Salmon River at Bargamin Bar traveling northeast along Trail 502 to junction of Trail 501, traveling southeast on Trial 501 to Main Salmon River, traveling west along Main Salmon River including Trail 96 back to the intersection at Bargamin Bar.  Trail 576 and Trail 577 are within the Area Closure. Travel on these trails as well as the area bound by them, is prohibited.

NOTE:  The Main Salmon River is open to the public for boat traffic along the closure area. River right and river left are open to all boat traffic and camping. River users should expect to see smoke and may encounter smoky conditions while on the river.

NEW  Order No. 01-17-05-17-004 (Related to the Pronghorn fire)

From the junction of Meadow Creek and Trail 611, in S4, T29N, R10E, Boise meridian.  Follow Trail 611 southerly to junction of Trail 668, then follow Trail 688 to Junction of Trail 505.  Then follow Trail 505 to the junction of Trail 541.   Then follow Trail 541 to Meadow Creek then follow Meadow Creek downstream (north then west) to the point of beginning. 

Trail 615 is also closed and included in this closure area.  Area closure would be on the west and south side of Meadow Creek. (Red River RD Side)

MAGRUDER ROAD CORRIDOR (Forest Road 468) – Subject to Emergency Closure

Visitors wanting to travel the Magruder Corridor Road, Forest Road 468 (a/k/a Nez Perce Road) to Darby, Montana, are advised that by virtue of fire activity on the Nelson Creek fire the road could close at any time near its junction with the West Fork Road (Montana State Highway 473).   For more information about the Nelson Creek fire and closure, please see Inciweb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5549/.
