Lochsa Madness: Celebrating 50 Years of Wild and Scenic Rivers

Release Date: May 7, 2018

Every year, Memorial Day Weekend draws a crowd of people to the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests for Lochsa Madness–a weekend of river adventure as whitewater enthusiasts take advantage of spring runoff and wild water on the Lochsa River.

This year, the celebration will be bigger and better than ever, with events all weekend long celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. The Wild and Scenic Lochsa River was one of the original rivers designated under this Act in 1968, which continues to protect the river's free-flowing waters and outstanding scenery and recreation.

Many groups came together to make the 2018 Lochsa Madness event special, with events and activities that celebrate Wild and Scenic Rivers, provide information about the Act, and help us continue to appreciate the wild and wonderful Lochsa River. We hope you'll join in the fun!

SCHEDULE: Events take place Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27. All times PDT.

  • Saturday, 3:00–5:00 p.m.: Bring your family to the pavilion at Wilderness Gateway Campground for kid-friendly river education activities, boating skills relay races, a welcome presentation, and raffle.
  • Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.: Wake up with free coffee (bring your own mug) at the Fish Creek put–in and learn more about the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River.
  • Saturday and Sunday, All Day: Recycle your cans at Lochsa Falls and learn more about the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River.
  • Saturday and Sunday, 7:30/8:00 p.m. (approximately): Wild and Scenic River films, rafting videos, and Idaho Whitewater Association video contest at the pavilion at Wilderness Gateway Campground.
