Uwharrie National Forest Trail Strategy

Uwharrie Trail Strategy

With help from a wide variety of partners, the Forest Service is working to develop a Trail Strategy for the Uwharrie National Forest.

The agency initiated this process because use of forest trails in North Carolina is increasing every year. Resources used to maintain trails have been static or decreasing. The emphasis will be on high-quality experiences on sustainable trail systems. The trail strategy is the next step in implementing the Land and Resource Management Plan for the Uwharrie National Forest, which called for designated non-motorized and motorized trails.

The goals of the project are:

  • Identify an ecologically sustainable system-reduce impacts to other resources
  • Provide a quality, sustainable recreation experience
  • Integrate national forest trail system with surrounding communities, county comprehensive plans, adjacent outfitter guide outlets, other federal/state/local trail systems
  • Identify a vision for a sustainable trail system that offers a variety of experiences to a variety of users.
  • Organize and empower volunteer groups to provide increased maintenance and support to the forest trails program in an efficient and integrated manner.
  • Update the agency database of non-motorized NFsNC trails- confirm purpose, location and condition of existing trail system
Uwharrie Trail Strategy
Dozens of local residents gathered for the kick off meeting of the Uwharrie Trail Strategy effort held in September 2014.

Representatives from a wide range of trail-user groups, individuals who represent local communities and ecotourism, or individuals not represented by larger user groups are invited to collaborate in the process, which is expected to take up to a year to complete. The result will be recommendations for a comprehensive trail management plan for the Uwharrie National Forest in North Carolina, along with a stronger community of volunteers to assist with these efforts.

With more than 180 miles of system trails, the Uwharrie National Forest encompasses 50,000-plus acres in the Piedmont of North Carolina.
