Winter Trails Open as Roads Close for Winter Season on Chelan Ranger District

Forest Service officials announced that seasonal road closures are in effect that restrict motorized wheeled vehicle use on the Chelan Ranger District.

“These roads are important parts of the groomed winter trail system for both snowmobiling and Nordic skiing and are closed each winter to wheeled motorized use,” said Chelan District Ranger Kari Grover Wier.  Ski trail grooming operations will begin at Echo Ridge Nordic Ski area this weekend with the recently fallen snow and additional snowfall predicted.

“We expect Echo Ridge to be fully operational for cross-country skiing next week,” said Chelan Ranger District Resource Assistant Paul Willard.  “Snowmobile trails will be open this Saturday but snowmobile grooming operations have not begun,” he said.  Snowmobilers should be aware that the Black Canyon snowmobile trail is closed to all motorized use including snowmobiles this season due to a large washout on the road.

Annually, these roads are closed to four-wheel vehicles and open to snowmobiles:

  • Grade Creek Road (FS Road No. 8200) and Upper Joe Creek Road (FS Road No. 8210), are closed beyond Antilon Lake Sno-Park.
  • Washington Creek Road (FS Road No. 8021) and Cooper Mountain Road (FS Road No. 8020) are closed above Echo Valley Sno-Park.
  • Slide Ridge Road (FS Road No. 8410) and Shady Pass Road (FS Road No. 5900) closed above 25 Mile Creek Sno-Park.
  • Purtteman Gulch Road (FS Road No. 8010) is used as an ungroomed snowmobile trail and a non-motorized Nordic trail.

Winter recreationists need to be prepared for winter conditions, especially since weather conditions can change rapidly.  Be equipped for snow-covered and icy roads and carry extra supplies for emergencies.  Additionally, please abide by seasonal road closures to facilitate safe use of National Forest roads and trails for all recreationists.

Day use fees will begin on December 11 at Echo Ridge Nordic Ski Area.  Ski passes are required for both ski and snowshoe trail use at Echo Ridge once the ski area officially opens.  Day passes are available on-site for $10 per adult.  Passes are free for skiers or snowshoers age 17 or under.  Season passes are available for $70 at the Chelan Ranger District office or online at lakechelannordic.org
