Estes Ridge Fire Update

LEAVENWORTH — New lightning fire located 19 miles up Chiwawa River valley

  • Acres: 5 acre spot, 0% containment
  • Location: 31 miles northwest of Leavenworth
  • Start Date: September 8, 2018             
  • Cause: Lightning      

Current Activity: A new spot fire has been located 19 miles up the Chiwawa River on a sub ridge between Old Gib Mountain and Estes Butte. The fire is burning in sub-alpine fir, timber, brush and snags. The fire is smoldering, creeping and backing with some single tree torching. Wenatchee River Ranger District fire crews have confined the fire. 

District fire staff are developing a strategy to manage the fire due to concerns for firefighter safety and exposure, the vegetative structure and forest health in addition to forecast weather for the area and timing of the season.    

Evacuations:  None at this time. No structures are at risk. 

Closures: No road, trail, campground or area closures are in place for this fire at this time. Fire managers are currently assessing the fire and will implement closures if needed. Information will be posted at campgrounds and trail-heads to alert the public about the fire burning in the vicinity.

Smoke/Weather: Gusty winds are possible today that may increase fire growth and activity, including the potential for spot fires. Smoke may be visible from the Chiwawa Road #6200 and campgrounds in the vicinity.
