Wildfire Update

Release Date: Aug 21, 2020

Currently, there are two fires burning in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest:

Jungle Creek Fire

  • Acres: 120
  • Containment: 60%
  • Personnel: 98

On August 12, 2020 in the Jungle Creek area, a fire started within the Little Naches River drainage. Smoke from the fire is visible to I-90 travelers and to the communities of Naches, Yakima, Ellensburg and Cle Elum. As crews continue to make good progress, aviation resources helped cool hot spots and areas along the flanks of the fire, while firefighters construct new fire lines. Recreationists are asked not to travel in the Road #1900 area above the junction with State Route 410 and Little Naches Road #1900. Due to the fire’s proximity to dispersed camping areas and developed campgrounds, including Kaner Flat and Crow Creek campgrounds, will remain closed for public safety.

Chikamin Fire

The Chikamin Fire was detected by a reconnaissance flight on July 31,2020 and it is in the Chikamin Ridge area 22 miles north of Leavenworth, Washington. Favorable weather remained overnight and has kept fire activity low with no active spread, expect for some smoldering. Smoke production is minimal and confined within the local area of the fire. Operations include continuing to hold fire progression to the south along the southern flank, to protect values at risk, and suppression repair as conditions allow. Road No. 6210 and trailheads in the vicinity are closed due to public safety concerns.
