Hamma Hamma, WA - The Maple fire is located west of Highway 101, northwest of Hamma Hamma. The fire is burning in heavy timber, 200ft trees - mature cedar, spruce & fir trees. Elk Lake trail runs through the middle of the fire and Jefferson Creek runs at the bottom of the fire. The fire is in a remote location with steep terrain. Resources have been ordered but due to a busy fire season, resources are in high demand across the region.

Participating agencies in fighting this wildfire include: Olympic National Forest and Washington State Dept. of Natural Resources.

Western Washington Incident Management Team (WWIMT) led by Kent Standford, Incident Commander, assumed command of the Maple fire on Aug 6 at 6:00 pm. Management of this fire has allowed local emergency resources to return to their immediate jurisdictions.

The Maple fire has burned 70+ acres, is 5 percent contained and has roughly 50 personnel working the fire. Air resources have been requested to assist with building and maintaining containment lines.

A temporary flight restriction (TFR) has been put in place over the Maple fire area restricting public access for aircrafts including drones. The public is reminded that all air operations are grounded any time a drone is sighted within the TFR, which inhibits their ability to do critical fire suppression efforts. Flying within the TFR is prohibited and against the law.

The Olympic National Forest has closed the Jefferson Ridge Trail and Elk Lake Trail and well as their trailheads. The 2401 and 2421 roads are closed to public access. Lena Lake area is still open, but expect smoke when recreating there.

Due to high temperatures and low humidity, fire danger remains extremely high across the state. Be sure to check with your local fire agencies for restrictions and for forest and state closures.
