Gold Lake 4x4 trail and campground improvements

Temporary Closure July 9 - September 9

The Gold Lake 4x4 trail and portions of the 4x4 campground will be temporarily closed to allow installation of new evaporative toilets, signage, kiosk and benches, thanks to help from the Plumas County Resource Advisory Committee.

Hardy campers have been “packing it in/packing it out” since the pit toilets (known as “large capacity cesspools”) were removed last year due to potential health and safety issues for campers, the lake and surrounding forest.

The 4x4 Campground, located in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area in the eastern Plumas National Forest in CA, is accessible only by boat or four wheel drive vehicles.

Three of the sixteen campsites (#4, 5 and 6) will remain open and available to boat-in campers on a first-come/first-serve basis, although visitors will experience some noise and dust from the construction. Campers may choose to stay at nearby Gold Lake Campground or any of the numerous campgrounds throughout the recreation area.

Questions regarding the improvements, boat-in camping opportunities, and temporary closure may be directed to the Beckwourth Ranger District at (530) 836-2575.
