Prescott NF Requests Expressions of Interest for Horsethief Basin Recreation Area

PRESCOTT, AZ – October 7, 2019 – The Prescott National Forest is seeking a new vision for the Horsethief Basin Recreation Area south of Crown King.  Public and private entities are encouraged to share their ideas of how the recreation area could be used and managed in the future, and what it would take to make those ideas a reality.  Interested parties are encouraged to submit a Request for Expression of Interest (RFEI) by February 14, 2020.

Horsethief Basin Recreation Area offers a variety of recreational opportunities including: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, fishing, and OHV riding. Horsethief Basin Lake is a small lake that offers electric motor and non-motorized boating and fishing. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, red ear sunfish, and channel catfish.

There are a multitude of trail opportunities in the Horsethief Basin Area including horseback riding and hiking opportunities in Castle Creek Wilderness.  Palace Station and the community of Crown King are in close proximity to the Horsethief Basin Area. Developed recreation sites include Horsethief Cabin, Hazlett Hollow Campground, and Turney Gulch Group Campground.  Horsethief Cabin and Turney Gulch Group Campground are available by reservation at www.recreation.gov. Hazlett Hollow Campground is first-come, first-served at this time.  Day use sites and trails are open year-round; the campgrounds are not currently available during the winter.

A site visit with Forest Service staff will take place on October 23, 2019.  During the site visit, interested parties will be able to tour Turney Gulch, Hazlett Hollow and Horsethief Cabin facilities, including areas that are normally closed to the public and have an opportunity to discuss ideas with forest staff about possible commercial opportunities in the future.  Please RSVP to Susan Johnson, susan.a.johnson@usda.gov or at (928) 443-8075 by October 11, 2019.

Details for submitting and RFEI can be found on the Prescott National Forest website at:  https://tinyurl.com/Horsethief-Basin-RFEI.
