National Forest Fuel Wood Cutting

The Pike & San Isabel National Forests have adopted a policy and necessary regulations to meet the demand for fuel wood.  The objective remains to provide individuals with an opportunity to cut and gather their own fuel wood at minimal costs and within the limits imposed by the environment, land ownership patterns, availability of access, and other ongoing uses of the public land.

Fuel wood for personal and commercial use may be cut and gathered in designated areas only.  A permit is required and must be obtained in advance before cutting, gathering and removing.

Permits will be issued at a cost of $20.00 to $40.00 per cord depending on location.  The permit will specify a certain designated area and period of time.  When wood is available, permits can be obtained at the Pikes Peak Ranger District, Monday through Friday, 8am to 4:30pm.

Customers will be required to show proper photo ID, such as a driver's license or any other form of government approved ID. Customers will also be asked to provide vehicle information (make, model, year, color, license plate #) of the vehicle they plan to transport the fuelwood in. For additional information, please contact the Pikes Peak Ranger District office (719-636-1602).

Permits: The price increased to $20 per cord for dead trees that have not been processed. There are new options which include $30 per cord for felled and topped trees and $40 per cord for decked, processed, and de-limbed trees.  The minimum purchase is one cord and the maximum cord limit remains at 10 cords per household, per year.

With your cooperation and with advanced planning, the National Forests will continue to provide opportunities to gather fuel wood.
