Comanche National Grassland Birding Checklist

This checklist is intended to familiarize you with the birds found on the Comanche National Grassland and surrounding areas in Southeast Colorado and Southwest Kansas. Within this area a wide variety of habitats may be found, such as canyon-mesa, yucca-sand sagebrush, short-grass prairie, intermediate grass prairie, non-irrigated agricultures, towns, prairie lakes, ponds and marsh areas. Many of the birds listed are shown as migrants and usually cannot be seen except during the spring and fall migrations. Some, like the Long-billed Curlew, stay only long enough to nest and then leave. Scaled quail are the most prominent yearlong residents. The birds listed here give some idea of the value of our Great Plains as habitat for bird life. Preservation and management of habitat for all forms of wildlife is one of the important jobs on the National Grassland. Additions to this list are welcome. List was compiled from historical records, as well as recent records by Forest Service staff and visiting bird watchers.

Revised February 05

Bird Viewing Tips

  • Use binoculars, spotting scopes or a telephoto lens so you can avoid approaching birds too closely.

  • Watch behavior for signs of distress. Birds may scold you, dive-bomb, or try to lead you away from their nest. If you see this behavior, move farther away.

  • Give nests and nesting colonies a wide berth. Do not try to “save” baby animals—Mom is usually somewhere nearby.

  • Keep your dog and cat under your control. Cats kill millions of songbirds in the US each year.
