Project | Suction Dredge Mining on the South Fork of the Clearwater River

Law Enforcement and Investigations anticipated non-compliance with regulations regarding suction dredge mining on the South Fork Clearwater River. Working with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, the staff provided for public and employee safety through educational, personal contacts while achieving consistent enforcement action to re-gain compliance with Forest Service regulations.

Recipients | Nicolas Scholz and Patrick Legg, Law Enforcement Officers LE&I South Central Zone

Project | Infant Rescue

Through a cooperative operation involving Forest Service LE&I, Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, Montana Highway Patrol, and Bureau of Land Management, officers Nick Scholz and Patrick Legg saved the life of a five-month old baby who was left in the forest by a known violent offender under the influence of narcotics. The swift actions of these two officers resulted in the baby being found safe and the suspect apprehended without further incident.
