This update highlights Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER), post-fire harvest, reforestation and outreach efforts throughout the U.S. Forest Service - Northern Region following the 2017 fire season.

BAER

BAER Assessments are rapid evaluations conducted to determine if critical values are at risk due to imminent post-fire threats and to develop appropriate actions to manage unacceptable risks.

  • North Fork Hughes, Nez Perce-Clearwater Wilderness Fires, Blacktail, Green Ridge, Liberty BAER assessments in progress
  • Crucifixion and Strawberry BAER assessments complete; awaiting Regional Forester signature
    • Initial BAER treatments approved for Crucifixion on the Helena-Lewis and Clark 11/20/2017
  • Scalp
    • Initial BAER treatments approved for Scalp on the Flathead 11/9/2017
    • Initial BAER treatments approved for Scalp on the Helena-Lewis and Clark 11/20/2017
  • Alice Creek BAER assessment completed and treatments approved on 10/31/2017
  • Highway 200 Complex
    • Initial BAER treatments approved for the Kootenai on 10/24/2017
    • Interim BAER treatments approved for the Kootenai on 11/20/2017
    • BAER assessment in progress for the Lolo
