Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy - Forest Management

We spent more than a year developing a 10-year priority project area list for integrated forest management – working from the ground up with ideas and recommendations from Tribes, partners and the public. We heard loud and clear that restoration is a priority, management should uplift recreation and tourism, and timber and forest products remain important in Southeast Alaska. People will see that reflected in our work.
Our dedicated team of scientists and experts finalized a list that covers the full range of management activities to meet the greatest diversity of public needs. And our partners will be vital to building and sustaining the capacity we need to complete a list of priorities this large.
To learn more about project areas or find out how to be a partner in completing the integrated work, visit the SASS-FM Storymap and select the area you are interested in. An email contact for each project area will be at the end of the summary. The Storymap will also contain quarterly updates, to let the public know how the work is progressing.
You can also obtain the summaries and project area contacts by downloading the Project List Summary PDF.

In April 2023, the Forest Service began an engagement effort to gather input from the public. This effort resulted in more than 300 comments which were submitted through community workshops, engagement and consultation with tribal citizens and governments, meetings with partners, engagements with community groups and an interactive Storymap.
The input received helped to finalize assessment criteria and develop a list of priority project areas for the next ten years.
