Region 4 Fire Hire


Region 4 is using the centralized fire hire process for hiring permanent fire positions. Fire Hire is a Forest Service process that we use to hire the majority of our permanent workforce in fire management positions at the GS-4 through GS-9 grade level.

We are looking for a committed, hardworking, highly skilled workforce to suppress wildfires and work in fuels management on 12 National Forests located in Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah and California. The fire and aviation management program is very rewarding and requires working safely as part of a team in a variety of specialized positions; including dispatch, engine crews, fuels technicians, handcrews, helitack, hotshot crews, smokejumpers, and prevention. The unique feature of this process is the ability to immediately backfill positions that have been vacated during the fire hiring process. See the list below of all currently vacant position and the list that shows all possible positions that could become vacant during the fire hire process. We will also hire our fire apprentices during fire hire. Please visit this link for more information on the apprentice program. This is not for summer seasonal temporary positions.

Label that reads Applicants Apply by Deadline.October 8, 2019 to October 29, 2019

Application announcement will be activated in on October 1, 2019.  Applications must be submitted through eRecruit hiring services. Applicants must attach a copy of their IQCS Master Record or equivalent that will show they meet the IFPM requirements for the job. Applicants are encouraged to apply for multiple locations (where they would accept a position if offered), even if vacancies for certain locations are not listed as vacant. Supervisory Reference Checks, and Subject Matter Expert evaluations will occur these weeks. Please ensure your references are notified of this and they are available at the email address (preferred) or phone number provided on your application.

Representatives from each forest will make recommendations for hiring. Applicants selected will be notified by a Forest Service representative by phone. Applicants not selected should be notified by e-mail. During the selection week candidates will be given 4 hours to respond to voicemails or emails from the recommending officials. It is highly encouraged to be available via phone during this time.
