Subpart B: Designation of Roads, Trails and Areas for Motor Vehicle Use

Background

National forests throughout California have been working since 2003 on Subpart B, the designation of roads, trails and areas for motor vehicle use to develop changes to motor vehicle use by the public of the existing National Forest Transportation System.  The majority of the national forests in Region 5 have completed Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) decisions related to Subpart B which analyzed the prohibition of cross-country travel by motor vehicles, and if necessary, made changes to the National Forest Transportation System.

Routes designated in Travel Management Subpart B are included as part of the current road system.  The designation of these roads was the result of considerable analysis along with public involvement in the site-specific environmental analysis using NEPA with a decision by the responsible official.  These roads are part of the designated National Forest Road System.

Current Status

Travel Management Subpart B required national forests to designate motor vehicle use (designate roads, trails and areas) by vehicle class, and if appropriate, by time of year.  The national forests had a commitment to the public to prohibit cross-country travel and designate a system of routes.  The majority of the California National Forests have completed this commitment in fulfilling the requirements of Travel Management - Subpart B.
