National Forests Offer Firewood Permits in the Portland Metro Area

Personal use firewood cutting permits are available on the Mt. Hood and Gifford Pinchot National Forests. The Mt. Hood National Forest offers permits between April 15 and November 30. The Gifford Pinchot National Forest offers permits year-round.

Please visit a local ranger district office to get a firewood permit, map, and list of locations where harvesting firewood is allowed. Personal use firewood permits sell for $10.00 per cord and there is a minimum charge of $20.00 per permit. Each household may harvest up to six cords annually. Firewood permits are only valid on the forest where they are purchased.

While firewood permits may be available, some forest roads may be inaccessible due to winter conditions. Anything from fallen trees, rock slides, and snow accumulation may be blocking roads. Firewood cutting of marked timber or within timber sale boundaries is prohibited.

It’s a good idea to take plenty of water, food, a first aid kit, and emergency equipment. In the case of an emergency, it may be hours before you are able to summon a rescue party. Let friends or family know when you are leaving and returning home. Much of the forest is remote and does not have cell phone service. A GPS device may be unreliable. Enjoy harvesting fuelwood from your national forest, but please do it safely.

To help insure a sustainable firewood program, please follow the guidelines below:

  • Do not fall standing trees, dead or alive.
  • Adhere to local restrictions and carry necessary equipment including: saws equipped with a .023” or smaller mesh spark arrestor, a long handled shovel with an 8” round point blade, and pressurized chemical fire extinguisher 8 oz. or larger.
  • Before going to the forest, call the local district office for up-to-date information on road conditions
  • If you see illegal or questionable harvest practices notify the local district office.
